About the Ensemble
Based in Seattle, Chicharra Tango plays classics from the 30s, 40s, and 50s, transporting the heart from the Golden Age of Tango to modern milongas. Their commitment to bringing the passion of Buenos Aires to audiences throughout the Pacific Northwest will get you out of your seat and in the mood to dance.
Harlan Glotzer – Bandoneón & Bandleader
Upon first hearing Harlan has been enraptured with the music of tango, and inspired to bring those sounds alive. It’s ability to drive a hundred couples across a dance floor drove him to craft an ensemble to recreate the feel of the classic tango orquestas of the 40s and 50s.
Harlan graduated from Cornish College of the Arts in 2007 with a Bachelor of Music in Classical Composition. He has composed music for concert, performance, and film, as well as directing the circus ensemble Toy-Box Trio. His passions for music extend to organology (musical instrument development/technology) and the instrument as a key to unlocking the varied acoustic sound pallets available to musicians. To that end Harlan tunes, repairs, and maintains harpsichords and pianos in the greater Seattle area. He has worked with institutions including the Moore Theater, Neptune Theater, Early Music Guild, Fremont Abbey, and University of Washington. Paired with his passion for tango, Harlan is also currently steeped in research on the construction, repair, and maintenance of the bandoneón as well as working on a couple bandoneón restoration projects.
Andrew Foster – Violin
Andrew Foster is a Seattle-based classically trained violinist with a long history of performing dance music. At the age of 16, he started a contra dance band, The Retrospectacles, and performed as one of two fiddlers for the next seven years. Andrew graduated from the University of Washington in Seattle with a double degree in music and computer science in 2013. That same year, he was introduced to Tango when he joined Chicharra Tango, and he jumped at the opportunity to combine dance rhythms with classical virtuosity. As a member of Chicharra Tango, Andrew brings passionate and elegant violin to milongas throughout Seattle and beyond.
Dana Wen – Piano
Pianist Dana Wen plays an eclectic blend of classical, tango, and toy piano. A graduate of the University of Washington School of Music, Dana performs and teaches in the Seattle area. She is a founding member of Chicharra Tango, an ensemble dedicated to sharing the traditional music of Argentine tango. Dana also plays toy piano with Toy-Box Trio, performing new classical music with a whimsical twist.
